Johnson Controls CCT Installation & Upgrade Guide

The Configuration and Commissioning Tool (CCT) is essential for programming and configuring FX Series controllers. Whether you're installing CCT for the first time or upgrading to a new version, following best practices ensures a smooth setup while avoiding common issues.

CCT Installation: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Check System Requirements

Before installing CCT, ensure your system meets these minimum requirements:

  • Operating System: Windows 10/11 (Professional or Enterprise recommended)
  • RAM: 16GB or higher for optimal performance
  • Storage: Minimum 20GB of free space
  • Additional Software:
    • .NET Framework 3.5 or higher
    • Java Runtime Environment
    • Adobe Reader
    • Permissions: Administrator access to install software and drivers

2. Uninstall Older Versions

If you have CCT version 10.2 or older, uninstall it before installing a newer version. To check your version, open CCT, click Help > About.

3. Install Required Dependencies

CCT requires certain software to function correctly:

  • If installing on a desktop operating system without SQL installed, CCT will automatically install SQL Server 2019 Express with CU18 (64-bit).
  • Firewall Configuration: Allow connections on port 1433 to prevent SQL connection failures. To configure firewall settings:
    • Navigate to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall.
    • Add an exception for port 1433.

4. Set Up Your Network & Device Connection

For the best results:

  • Use a Wired Connection: A direct Ethernet or USB connection is recommended for initial setup.
  • Configure Firewall & Antivirus: Add exceptions for CCT to prevent connection issues.
  • Match IP Configuration: Ensure your computer’s network settings align with your controller’s IP range.

5. Back Up Existing Controller Data

Before making any changes:

  • Use CCT's Backup & Restore feature to save current configurations.
  • Prevent data loss by storing backups securely before firmware updates or programming changes.

Updating and Upgrading CCT

  • Check your Software Manager to verify if your CCT version is eligible for an update before purchasing a new license.
  • CCT licenses can be updated within 12 months of purchase.
Upgrading CCT (If an Update Isn’t Available)
If your CCT license is not updatable, follow these steps to upgrade:

  1. Document Your System ID: Locate your system ID in CCT and email bas@stromquist.com with a request for a quote for a new license.
  2. Deactivate Old License Files: In CCT’s Software Manager, deactivate the existing license.
  3. Complete Purchase Process: Respond to the quote with your PO#, system ID, and confirmation that the old license has been deactivated.
  4. Install New License Files: Once received, install the new license in the Software Manager.

Final Tips for a Smooth CCT Experience

  • Always verify firmware compatibility with your FX controllers before installation.
  • Test communication between your PC and the controller before deploying changes.
  • If using wireless connections, ensure drivers for USB or Bluetooth dongles are installed.

By following these best practices, you’ll streamline the installation and upgrade process, avoiding setup delays and compatibility issues.
